Knowledge and perceptions of HIV infection among Finns in 1989

THE purpose of the study was to explore the degree of knowledge among Finns of human immunodef iciency virus (HIV) infection and their attitudes towards it. The sample comprised 1,912 individuals, aged between 15 and 64, selected randomly and interviewed by telephone or in person in August 1989. There was good knowledge of the modes of transmission of HIV, HIV test methods and places in which testing takes place. The attitudes of the Finns towards the testing of special groups, such as for eigners, were relatively strict. On the other hand, attitudes towards those who have contracted HIV infection were fairly positive. Knowledge of and atti tudes towards HIV infection in Finland remained unchanged between 1988 and 1989. On an inter national basis, the situation in relation to HIV in Finland is good, and the possible reasons for this are discussed.
