'Are you dying to get a suntan?' — the pre- and post-campaign survey results

I.H. Cameron, MBChB, MPH

Formerly Senior Registrar in Public Health Medicine

Christine McGuire, BA, Dip MRS

Consumer Research Officer, Health Education Authority

'ARE you dying to get a suntan?' was a national skin cancer prevention campaign run by the Health Edu cation Authority during the summer of 1989 as part of the Europe Against Cancer programme. Through magazine advertising, leaflets and public relations activities, the campaign sought to raise public awareness about the dangers of the sun and to pro mote sun protection measures. Following the cam paign, there have been increases in awareness about some risk factors and sun protection measures, par ticularly the use of high sun protection factor sun cream. A suntan though, is still synonymous with being healthy and looking good.
