The paper is derived from an evaluation of a workplace smoking ban implemented at a major Scottish university. The evaluation relied on a combination of methods including analysis of policy documentation, a full-staff postal questionnaire, qual itative interviews with key members of the implementation process and participant observation of staff support classes. Drawing on the questionnaire data (including both quantitative and qualitative responses), the paper explores the ways in which patterns of work were perceived to be negatively affected by the ban and the impli cations for relationships between smokers and non-smokers at work.
